Reciprocating Gas Compressors

Internal Gear Pump
Verson "gear-within-a-gear" design principle stands out for its simplicity and efficiency, relying on only two moving components to achieve optimal operation. This minimalist approach is the cornerstone of the Verson positive displacement pumps, which are renowned for their reliable and energy-efficient performance. The fundamental mechanism involves the precise filling of the interstitial spaces between the teeth of the rotor and idler gears, enabling the accurate displacement of liquid.
In a positive displacement pump like this, the liquid is trapped and moved as a discrete quantity between the gear teeth with each rotation. Specifically, as the pump's shaft turns, liquid enters the pump chamber via the suction port. This liquid fills the cavities between the rotor and idler teeth. The crescent-shaped element at the pump's head effectively divides the flow, guiding the fluid towards the discharge port.
The idler gear, which is anchored to the pump cover, transports the liquid between its teeth and the inner surface of the crescent. The rotor gear, directly driven by the pump shaft, moves the liquid between its teeth and the outer surface of the crescent. This coordinated interaction ensures a steady and continuous flow, characteristic of positive displacement systems.
The only limitation to achieving peak efficiency with the Verson is the cleanliness of the liquid being pumped. As with all rotary pumps, the liquid must be relatively free of particulates to avoid wear or damage to the gear teeth, which could reduce performance and lifespan.
This design's robust simplicity offers a balance of dependability and efficiency, with minimal maintenance requirements due to the limited number of moving parts. However, it’s important to stay attuned to ongoing developments in pump technology, as continual innovations in materials and design could offer further optimizations in fluid handling systems.

Working Principles
The yellow-coloured portion at side indicates the liquid as it enters the suction port area of the casing and the area between the rotor teeth and corresponding concave area between the idler teeth. The two black arrows indicate the pump rotation and progress of the liquid.
Notice the progress of the liquid through the pump and between the teeth of rotor idler gear. Also, note how the crescent shape on the head divides the liquid and acts as a seal between the suction and discharge ports.
This illustration shows the pump in a nearly flooded condition just before the liquid being forced into the discharge port area. Notice how the gear design of the idler and rotor form locked pockets for the liquid to guarantee absolute volume control.
The view shows the pump in a completely flooded condition and in the process of discharging the liquid through discharge port. The rotor and idler teeth mesh, forming a seal equidistant between both ports, forcing liquid out the discharge port.
